Thanksgiving Day Parade

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

The one thing I always look forward to on Thanksgiving Day is the ‘Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.’ It is a time to relax and wait for your Thanksgiving festivities. You can enjoy a cup of coffee, Mimosa or a glass of wine, whatever your holiday tradition is.

History:

Macy’s Day Parade takes place on November 25th on NBC. The event began in 1924 when the department store wanted to debut their expansion from Broadway to Seventh Avenue along 34th Street. To help promote their store during the holiday season, Macy & Co. wanted to give the city of New York a parade on the morning of Thanksgiving. The parade was originally created for Christmas and was going to be called “Christmas Parade.”

On November 27, 1924, a police escort kicked off the parade starting at the intersection of 145th street and Convent Avenue. Originally the parade’s route was two city blocks long. Floats that covered the two blocks were about Mother Goose nursery rhymes. Employees dressed in costumes along with animals that came from the Central Park Zoo. The last thing viewers would see is Santa Claus.

The parade features school marching bands along with Macy’s Great American Marching Band and the NYPD marching band. Since its beginning the ‘Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade’ has become a mega event that delivers the who’s who of entertainment.

Why I love the parade:

I love watching the parade for all of the floats. The Broadway performances are entertaining. I enjoy seeing the performers, if I know who they are and have heard their music. I also get excited when I see the giant character balloons coming down the parade route.

It is on my bucket list to go to New York City and see the parade in person.
